On Saturday, July 29—the first day of the August Congressional recess—we’re teaming up with other progressive advocates to launch Our Lives on the Line: a massive nationwide day of action to lift the voices of the 23 million Americans whose health care will be ripped away if Congressional Republicans continue with their plan to give more power to big insurance companies and undermine affordable, quality care.
Leaders from the Women’s March, Tax March, Science March, Organizing for Action, Indivisible, MoveOn.org, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Center for Popular Democracy, Stand Up America, Our Revolution, Center for American Progress Action Fund, and others are joining forces in events across the country that will focus on members of Congress who supported repealing the Affordable Care Act.
Leading up to the 29th, we’ve also launched OurLivesOnTheLine.org, a new site that will highlight the stories of the millions of Americans who will suffer if Trumpcare becomes law. This site will also serve as a resource for Americans across the country to hold Our Lives on the Line actions in their communities.
With Congressional Republicans rushing forward with their plan to take away health care from millions, the fight to protect every American’s access to quality, affordable health care has never been more critical.
Our Lives on the Line will bring together leaders from the progressive and health care communities to stand against the Republican repeal bill and send a clear message to Congress: Our lives are on the line. The July 29 day of action will include a national event in Washington, D.C. and rallies across the country.
Here’s what some of our partners have to say about this effort:
“Health care should be a right for everyone who lives in America. Trumpcare will raise the health care costs of millions of Americans, all to give a massive tax break to the rich and powerful,” said Jennifer Epps-Addison, Network President and Co-Executive Director, Center for Popular Democracy. “Our lives are at stake. That’s why Our Lives on the Line will demonstrate that working Americans are joining the fight to protect their families’ care.”
“With a misguided House repeal bill drafted in secret that effectively takes away the insurance of 23 million Americans, and a Senate bill following a similar back room process, it has never been more important to stand up and fight for the protections Obamacare provides,” said Jesse Lehrich, Communications Director, Organizing for Action. “On the cusp of an incredibly important August recess, OFA will stand with other grassroots partners in making sure this administration knows that we can’t afford to go back to the time when people with pre-existing conditions were denied coverage, or go forward to a time when we would end Medicaid as we currently know it.”
“I know first-hand the importance of the Affordable Care Act, as my sister was born with a pre-existing condition. The desire by Trump and the Republicans to destroy the future for millions of people like my sister is inhumane and cruel,” said Paola Mendoza, Co-Director Of Partnerships and Artistic Director, The Women’s March. “Our Lives on the Line will demonstrate that my sister’s life is as important as any politician in Washington. On July 29, we will amplify the stories of ordinary Americans who are joining the fight to protect their families’ care.”
“Trumpcare is the worst bill for women’s health in a generation,” said Kersha Deibel, Director of Constituency Organizing, Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “This disastrous legislation ‘defunds’ Planned Parenthood; guts maternity coverage; and reduces access to contraception. One in five women in this country rely on Planned Parenthood for care. They will not stay silent as politicians vote to take away their care and their rights. Women and men across the country will fight to protect access to Planned Parenthood and to defeat this bill. The Senate should listen to the American people and reject the worst bill for women’s health in a generation.”
“Republicans have shown their constituents that they care more about giving Donald Trump a few political points than about the health and wellbeing of those they represent,” said Angel Padilla, Policy Director, Indivisible Project. “That they care more about giving corporations and the wealthy a massive tax break than providing American families with access to affordable health care. Our Lives on the Line is a demonstration of the constituent power that faces every member of Congress voting to repeal the ACA.”
“We cannot afford to take a step back in the fight for health care for all,” said Dr. Caroline Weinberg, public health researcher and Co-Chair, The March For Science. “Decades of research shows that regular access to care is critical to the health and wellbeing of our communities. Our lives on are on the line and we will make our voices heard on July 29.”
“Millions of Americans’ lives are literally on the line as Republicans in Congress attempt to repeal health care,” said Ben Wikler, Washington Director, MoveOn.org. “We’re coming together on July 29 to fight to protect Americans’ care, and to stand for the principle that affordable, quality care is a right, not a privilege.”
“The fight to protect health care is not about scoring political points or who is up and who’s down in Washington,” said Sean Eldridge, Founder and President of Stand Up America, a grassroots community of more than a million Americans resisting Trump. “It’s about whether millions of American families will be able to see a doctor, pay for their prescriptions, and receive preventative care. It’s a fight about families struggling with pre-existing conditions, and whether they will be punished for being sick. Lives are literally on the line, and now is the moment to make our voices heard.”
“Experts, insurance companies, constituency groups, and hundreds of thousands of Americans have voiced their opposition to Trumpcare at town halls and protests across the country,” said Emily Tisch Sussman, Director of Campaigns at the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “Our Lives on the Line will harness that energy in a massive demonstration that will show Republicans in Congress that we will not give up, and we will hold them accountable as they relentlessly try to rip health care from millions of American families.”
“The Republican plan to replace the Affordable Care Act is an affront to 23 million people who will lose health care under and the millions more who still don’t have any health care coverage at all,” said Shannon Jackson, Executive Director, Our Revolution Executive Director. “As the richest country in the world we should be able to provide all of our country’s residents with quality health care services. Our Revolution will continue to push both Democrats and Republicans for a Medicare for All system that expands coverage to everyone, not just those who can afford it.”
“Tax giveaways to the wealthy are not a health care plan,” said Nicole Gill, Executive Director, Tax March. “President Trump doesn’t get to jeopardize the lives of working families to fund tax breaks for himself, his friends, and his many many creditors.”
Behind closed doors, Senate Republicans are rushing forward with a secretive plan that will repeal the Affordable Care Act and take health care away from millions of Americans. Senate Republicans have refused to release their plan or hold any public hearings, but have indicated that their bill will essentially be the same as the deeply unpopular repeal legislation the House passed in May. That legislation would take health care away from 23 million Americans and raise premiums for millions more.
On July 29, Americans in communities across this country will join forces to reject this secretive process and stand against Congressional Republicans’ draconian and rushed plan to take health care away from millions.
